Shakira Sings in Germany, Signs Charity Deal

Columbian pop star Shakira is not interested in female football, she said in Germany which hosts the 2011 Women's World Cup. Her boyfriend, FC Barcelona striker Gerard Piqué was sitting nearby.

"I'm only interested in men's football," the 34-year old songstress («Whenever, Wherever») told a news conference on Saturday in a posh Frankfurt Hotel, smiling in the direction of her 23-year old beau.

But she wished the Columbian team good luck. It will be the first time the team is participating in the women's contest that is being held in a different city every four years.

Asked if there was any substance to emerging rumors of her pregnancy, she simply smiled.

Shakira, who performed a concert in Germany this weekend, used the occasion to sign an agreement with the German Department of Development to support her charity.

"The German government is an example for other world powers to get involved in the issue of education." she told the press conference. “Education is the key to eradicating poverty and for peace and global stability,” she said.

Part of the agreement sees Germany helping to finance the construction of a school for up to 1,400 children from poor families in the Colombian city of Cartagena.

Deputy Development Minister Hans-Jürgen Beerfeltz, left, said that the aims of his ministry and of Shakira’s foundation Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet Foundation) complemented each other very well.

“Both organizations are convinced that poverty can only be effectively tacked through investment in education,” he said before signing the agreement.

The charity, which Shakira set up in 1997, is dedicated to helping people who have been displaced due to the decades-long conflict in Colombia. Many of those forced to leave their homes end up in poverty, particularly women and children.
