An Austrian waitress has won the fifth edition of "Germany's Next Top Model". Alisar Ailabouni from Mattighofen in the province of Upper Austria was named winner of the fifth edition of the format created by German supermodel Heidi Klum.

Around 15,000 fans attended Thursday night’s final show in Cologne Lanxess Arena.

US pop siren Katy Perry performed before Klum revealed Syria-born Ailabouni as winner of the show. "Alisar showed that you can make it if you really want," she said.

More than 23,000 hopefuls applied to succeed German-Ethiopian Sara Nuru who – as most of her predecessors – failed to break through on to the international level after her triumph.

Ailabouni, 21, is confident she can launch a career as model as the victory means she will be on the cover of the German edition of fashion magazine Cosmopolitan.

Larissa Marolt, 18, from Carinthia, came eighth in the fourth series of the TV hit last year after winning the first Austrian version screened by Puls 4.

Top officials at the private Austrian station decided to screen a second edition following the first series being a full success.

Puls 4 chief Markus Breitenecker explained that the almost 200,000 viewers meant a market share of two per cent for the Vienna-based station.
